Right, that's obviously due to my older Xorg version.
I tried moving /usr/local to /usr/Local and then creating an empty /usr/local
so that building a fresh Xorg (with debugging in /etc/make.conf) would generate
all the libraries and binaries with debugging symbols.
Unfortunately, because I already had so much installed using pkg, it was a
catastrophic mess and I gave up.
So, I conclude that the only way to get the desired results would be to make a
clean FreeBSD installation and then build the ports with an empty /usr/local.
There may be better ways to do that, e.g. using poudriere, but I've never used
it.
