n.b.: virtio_random is the only call-site of virtqueue_poll() that passes
something other than NULL to the *len parameter:

sys/dev/virtio/random/virtio_random.c
288:    virtqueue_poll(vq, &rdlen);

sys/dev/virtio/block/virtio_blk.c
1442:   virtqueue_poll(vq, NULL);

sys/dev/virtio/network/if_vtnet.c
3526:           virtqueue_poll(vq, NULL);

tho i don't see how that would influence it.
