This issue has plagued me a lot over the years even to the point where I have
stopped using it - until recently. I updated it to a recent FreeBSD 13.1 and it
seems to be stable now!

Since I also tried various Linux variants back then and they all had to fight
with instabilities / reboots I suspect that it was:

TL;DR hardware issue in Baytrail GPU which was worked around or fixed in
drm/i915 in Linux Kernel 5.3
