Hello and thanks for your response.
This was happening in FreeBSD 13.0-STABLE #2 stable/13-n247316-5f4ba94eb59 ,
but, after an update yesterday to the latest STABLE, I can no longer reproduce.
I can just assume it was a temporary bug with my old checkout. 
After testing the same procedure today, it works well.
