> Does that make any changes here? rc.initdiskless is called very early in the boot process and kern.bootp_cookie won't exist (there wouldn't be a hostname either I think, which I also rely on with the in-kernel DHCP).

i made the changes to bootp ages ago, but as far as I remember you can get as kenv variables
much stuff, including hostname, which rc.initdiskless can use. I’m using a slightly modified rc.initdiskless btw.
it’s a bit late now, but i’ll try and refresh my memory tomorrow.
