smb connections are only used to make files, printers, named pipes, and 
other network resources on a windows host available to FreeBSD workstations 
on a LAN. Security, at least for us, is not an issue as no user has a 
password. smb is all used for IPC communications. Any issues from this can 
be handled by a fire wall. In our setup no host on the LAN is exposed to 
the internet.
