(I used to work at a university that had NetApp filers configured for ISO-8859-1 and staff members of all nationalities who had their endpoints set to their native language instead of the local one; I wrote conv-tools to assist support staff in cleaning up users' home directories after they were migrated to newer filers configured for UTF-8.)
