Gnome not taking keyboard input

I'm sure that I'm missing something obvious/trivial...

When I start gnome (42.5), the mouse works, but if I start a shell or an xterm, I'm unable to type into the window. I've looked around, but can't seem to find the answer to this question. (I'm able to use vtwm with no problems.)

Which setting do I need to check?
