   I recall hearing of users waiting hour"s" for freebsd-update to take 
them to 14.0 when it came out; could provide helpful reading material 
for your current status while you (continue to) wait until the update 
finishes. I don't know if there are any sysctls to adjust or other 
changes to make to accelerate the current update.
   It seems worst with FreeBSD going through a major update + zfs. 13 
has also had a rough set of performance issues appear and good 
improvements result from solving them so an update to 13.4 then to 14.x 
as two separate steps would have likely helped performance.
