Just did something similar, and it was far easier to simply build a new system and restore from backup or mount the old filesystems (I don't use ZFS or anything like that). As for the argument that it's worth doing to learn how things work, unless you expect to do something like this again, it's not clear that it's a good use of one's time. Sure, it can be satisfying to make FreeBSD run on an ipod or clock radio but how practical is the knowledge gained there? Not many mechanics of my experience learn how to forge spanners and wrenches that can be easily purchased.
