It might also be possbile to take a snapshot of the filesystem where 
disk1.img lives and copy that file from the snapshot.
So there is not much difference, in this regard, with a zvol.

Yes, you can.

Whether that's a good idea or whether powering the VM off before is 
better/required... that's more a question for the VM than for the host.
