Problem upgrading from mySQL 5.7 to mySQL 8.4: SOLVED

I found a solution to my problem. It turns out that MySQL 8.4 will
not upgrade from 5.7.  I deleted 8.4, and installed 8.0. The
in-place upgrade worked like a charm.

Just here to document, in case anyone else has the same problem.
