How to make vi working with large tag files

The vi seems only working with a tags file having 5389 lines or less
tagging entries. Any entries in tags file after 5390 will be ignored by vi.

Does anyone know if there is a work around for this problem? or vi need to
be patched and rebuilt to use a large tags file?
