I concur on virtualbox…I have been running FreeBSD (started w 10.x, then
onto 11.4 and now 12.3) in VBox on an old (2009) iMac for some time now and
a 64 Gb image is more than enough for what I need it to do
Filesystem Size Used Avail Capacity Mounted on
/dev/ada0p2 59G 26G 28G 48% /
devfs 1.0K 1.0K 0B 100% /dev

Installation is quick, starting from a disk image in VBox, and then letting
it layout the filesystems, setting up services, etc. Pkgs or ports are up
to you but I am running mariadb, nginx, nextcloud and wordpress, with a mix
of ports/pkgs and developer tarballs. I started w FreeBSD 4.11 after a few
years of Linux and never looked back…
