Agreed.

While it would be awesome for everyone making a living from FreeBSD, 
this is not unique to us. All open source projects benefit someone or 
other, without them contributing.

I don't think there is anything untoward from most people in this 
regard. It's just a lack of understanding of how open source projects work.
