In addition to the good advice about looking for a Google Summer of Code position, I'd also suggest contacting the FreeBSD Foundation. On the other hand, the FreeBSD project itself doesn't employ people, but many of the people that contribute to FreeBSD are employed by third party companies to work on FreeBSD related development. If you would like to seek an opportunity in that area, then perhaps your best strategy would be to become active in the community -- a track record of bug reports and patches will speak volumes to a potential employer.
