Okay, you got the most recent version, so you did upgrade it when you moved
to BigSur.  As for launching it without starting XQuartz first, that has
never worked for me.  I have always had to launch it first before ssh'ing
to another box.  I have seen it work when launching apps locally.  For
example, I frequently use dia which requires X, and that launches XQuartz
for me.

 Maybe try it from the xterm provided by XQuartz to see if that makes a
difference.  Otherwise, I am at a loss.  I haven't used it much recently in
this manner since it does not seem to work well with my Ubuntu box running
eclipse.  The response is way, way slow.
