I use tcsh and have this at the top of .tcshrc :

setenv XIM ibus
setenv GTK_IM_MODULE ibus
setenv QT_IM_MODULE ibus
setenv XMODIFIERS @im=ibus
setenv XIM_PROGRAM ibus-daemon
setenv XIM_ARGS "--daemonize --xim"
setenv XDG_RUNTIME_DIR ~/tmp

It might work for you. I think in your case the last line and the third line 
might be relevant. Make sure ~/tmp exists.
