pkg writing to /

Hi,
	how can I tell pkg not to write to /? in my case sometimes /
is mounted ro, and so for example pkg update failed, or
/ - which is usually- kept as small as possible gets filled up, eg 
by /.pkgtemp.compat.xxxxx/linux
