Ports mostly create the /var/xxx dir in the rc startup script. Because on diskless systems /var might be a tmpfs which is empty after every (re)boot. I remember a thread about ports providing a mtree specification to standardize this process in a central place. I don't know the status of this. A quick search gave me this part of the thread: https://lists.freebsd.org/archives/freebsd-current/2022-August/002519.html Anyway, I am not authoritative on this subject, so let's see what others say about it.
