[xavier@numenor ports]$ grep DEFAULT_VERSIONS /etc/make.conf
DEFAULT_VERSIONS+=ssl=openssl
DEFAULT_VERSIONS+=python=3.8
DEFAULT_VERSIONS+=php=7.3
DEFAULT_VERSIONS+=perl5=5.34
[xavier@numenor ports]$ pkg info perl5
perl5-5.34.0
Name           : perl5
Version        : 5.34.0
Installed on   : Wed Aug 11 20:46:45 2021 CEST

As you can see, my version and DEFAULT_VERSIONS are in sync
