Chris and Helge,

It was indeed my firewall.

Following your tips, I opened it up for tcp/21, but it still didn't
like it - the logs showed it as denied using 'fetch --no-passive blah'
- so I might have to tweak the firewall a bit.

I also saw once in my logs it try port 80, unsuccessfully.

When I just used 'fetch blah', it started using high tcp ports,
somewhere above 54000. So I opened tcp ports 50000-60000, and now its
working fine.
