As I said, I am not at the place where I can test this until next week.  I have
14.1 on that system and it will go to 14.2 while I am there, so I'll be able to
test both.

So, not being an expert on sane, it looks like
/usr/local/etc/sane.d/dll.d/epsonscan2 names the "epsonscan2" library here:

    /usr/local/lib/sane/libsane-epsonscan2.so.1 ->
/usr/local/lib/epsonscan2/libsane-epsonscan2.so

You say you can work around the problem by removing the file
/usr/local/etc/sane.d/dll.d/epsonscan2 ?  So scanning still works with sane
without that file?  Presumably then, sane is still loading the epsonscan2
library somehow and this could be an easy fix ?

But if removing the file naming the epsonscan2 library causes the epsonscan2
library not to be loaded, we may need to patch code.  But one would expect the
Epson scanner not to work without this library.
