The only other distro I've found that have both versions packaged is OpenSUSE
but no bugs reports as far as I can tell or patches but I'm not sure if
bugzilla is the right place for packages.

Are all packages rebuilt or are you just replacing libunistring?

Also, does gcc make any different?

Perhaps ask courier upstream for guidence on how to debug?
