            Bug ID: 282890
Summary: Ports framework: make flavors more visible and user
                    friendly
           Product: Ports & Packages
           Version: Latest
          Hardware: Any
                OS: Any
            Status: New
          Severity: Affects Only Me
          Priority: ---
         Component: Individual Port(s)
          Assignee: ports-bugs@FreeBSD.org
          Reporter: freebsd@ohreally.nl

Hi,

Port flavors currently are pretty much invisible to users/sysadmins. I
understand that maintaining slave ports was time consuming, but at least the
slave ports were easily visible to users. This is made even worse by the fact
that there is no documentation (at all) about flavors from a user/sysadmin
point of view; the only documentation I can find is for port maintainers.

As I see it, there would be 2 easy ways to make port flavors more sysadmin
friendly:

Add a flavor selection dialog before the port options dialog.
Or bring back the slave port directories, but with a Makefile that just builds
the original port in the selected flavor.

On top of that, a section in the FreeBSD handbook explaining flavors would be a
good idea.

Thanks for considering,
  Rob
