Ok, the change makes sense and looks pretty good to me.

I don't like the idea of changing the default based on some file presence. I
think the default should be just "base" - it is simple and foolproof.

Another little nitpick is a bit a misleading name of the GSSAPI_VER variable.
But I don't have an idea how to name it better.
