I showed you how to do it by patching the upstream Makefile.

This is against policies for good reasons. If upstream changes anything about
how the software is built and installed, you don't want to catch up in the port
every time.

No, you're still assuming SSE2 as soon as your *build* machine supports it, but
not every machine supported by the i386 architecture will be able to execute
that.
