changing the mtu didn't fix the issue.  Howerver I can consistently reproduce
the following: once the cards are put in promiscuuous  mode they are able to
reach each others. Disabling promiscuous mode after don't changethis state and
cards are still  able to ping each others.  I don't see any useful log that can
explain it though.
