I added the following line and rebooted.

hw.usb.usbhid.enable=1

Keyboard and Track pad are still non-functioning from the OS's perspective. Out
of desperation I added the following line and rebooted.

hw.usb.usbhid.enable="1"

Still no change in keyboard/track pad functionality.
