Thank you both for the excellent analysis.

I was playing around with the settings you provided and had some success.

I found that the following *sometimes* works:

sysctl dev.pcm.8.play.vchanformat=s32le:2.0
mpv --audio-format=s32 file.mp3

Executing the mpv command repeatedly every once in a while the song plays
normal and /dev/sndstat looks like so:
