For the records, I was able to test a very similar setup with a 6in-6out USB
interface, 24bit samples at 48kHz. I had no problems playing 2 channels of
16bit samples at 44.1kHz, and the vchan conversion chain was exactly the same
as discussed here. So the vchan apparatus seems not to be broken in general.

I had no other clients or sound servers running though.
