So, fission.autostart=false doesn't fix it/work around it. I don't know how much memory & swap firefox was using last night but I did *not* notice any memory-related lag when I went to bed. This morning (9 hours later), everything was very laggy - so I checked memory usage and found the system with 90-something percent memory and swap used.
