no - thinking about it further, I can solve several problems at once
by backup, blatting the system then restoring. The enc zfs was installed
when i hadn't a clear-enough idea for the role of the hardware. 
Retrospectively, it was a rash decision.

Thanks for your suggestions though. They're filed in freebsd-zfs.txt ;)
