Although I have not yet managed to test this without ZFS, I have established
that with zfs_load="YES" but without "vboxnet_enable="YES"" in /etc/rc.conf
(zfs.ko and vboxnetflt.ko seeming to be the two modules with which amdgpu.ko
has, um, personality conflicts), I can now boot up without crashing (so far). 
Does anyone have any idea what zfs.ko and vboxnetflt.ko do that other modules
don't do?
