FWIW, linux_base packages only exist to serve as dependencies of other
packages. They are _not supposed_ be directly installed in the way the docs
currently suggest. It doesn't really make sense to discuss their usage out of
ports tree. All of our packaged Linux apps are either desktop apps or... game
servers.

You aren't willing to pay even a minimal amount of attention: Steam is
structured in way that requires 32-bit compat to run 64-bit apps on an amd64
machine. No 32-bit compat = no Steam. Think what you will about it, but it's an
upstream requirement and they aren't budging.
