https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=281041 --- Comment #3 from Jim D. <radicleparticles@gmail.com> --- Starting with fresh installation of FBSD-14.1 on local (home built) host, I installed desired/needed applications either as locally compiled or pkg install where local compile encountered errors (such as noted above). I don't remember the exact sequence of (12 hours of) events but believe that py311 was installed as a dependency before py39 was later required as a dependency. Not knowing when a particular package requires 39 and won't work with an intalled 311 is not something that I have ever spent time pre-researching and trying to find a (preventative) solution. When looking at pages of previous FBSD version package/application installations, I would start with a compile to get the best "fit" for my particular HW, and then do pkg if the compile failed. I have no need nor intention of retaining py39 as "default", yet some packages require it and then "run afoul" of a prevously installed py311. This is the "old leap-frog" problem. Again - not knowing in advance about which applications require python and looking to see if there are/were any "remedial patches" for FBSD/pkg dealing with multiple versions of a dependent python, the attempted installation of dependency py39-cairo problem came as a surprise. I am not sure how best to provide useful after-affect guidance for such situations. There is nothing noted in the 14.1 Release notes, and whilst I usually at least peruse said documents, I am not looking for things that I don't know that will be a dependency. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.
