I just tried on 14.0-p6, same there:

  # ifconfig vtnet0 192.168.87.11
  ifconfig: WARNING: setting interface address without mask is
  deprecated, default mask may not be correct.

Interestingly, `ifconfig vtnet0 10.0.0.1` uses "/24" whereas
192.168.87.11 uses "/8".
