When I asked freebsd-hackers, overheating was the first guess: https://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-hackers/2018-May/052783.html I blew the dust out of the fan assembly and changed the bios fan settings to be more aggressive and the system has been rock solid since.
