I am at 13.4-STABLE and not at 14. Could this also be the source of the
trouble? 

If 13.4 is not the source of the trouble, then your comment is confusing. I run
many FreeBSD boxes from the exact same build (stable/13-1ec3289e48), with the
exact same loader.conf.  In each case loader.conf has nothing about usb in it
at all. 

Some of these machines have usbhid autoloaded, some do not. The only source of
data that points to why autoloading happens is ... having a USB keyboard on the
box. :)
