Here is some more discussion:
https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=261434 .  The bottom line is
that this is a sshfs bug.  Perhaps it's unfixable due to protocol limitations,
but there certainly isn't anything that FreeBSD can do about it ourselves.  If
you want it to be fixed properly, you'll have to take it upstream.  Otherwise,
I suggest you use the workaround of mounting with atime=off .
