Just to clarify/expand on the title:

The "spurious character" (twiddle from the previous screen) has always been
there, except that it is on a different location.  It is also important to note
that it can show as the last twiddle position, i.e., one of -, \, | or /.
I don't remember if it is only present in the lua loader and not in the forth
loader.
Here is an article from Toomas Soome, who ported it from Illumos, you can see
the artifact on page 4 on the top left corner, shown as a "-":
