I noticed that I'd also done an implicit test of another
context that no longer panics: without your patches,
booting with the EtherNet being via the dongle that
uses if_ure would panic unless things like ntpd
were not active for the boot sequence.

With your patching, I had no trouble booting using just
that dongle for the EtherNet, no avoidance of ntpd or
the like involved.
