After some bisecting I found the commit that affects me:

After commenting in GENERIC the following lines:
options COMPAT_LINUXKPI
device mlx5 # Base driver
device mlxfw # Firmware update
device mlx5en # Ethernet driver
...I built the actual stable/12 kernel and installed it on my 12.3-RELEASE-p5.
The SD card reader works correctly with this kernel and base system.
