I agree that more recent versions of macOS (Monterey 12.6.1 tested) have the
bug fixed with "grep (BSD grep, GNU compatible) 2.6.0-FreeBSD".  So, indeed,
there is little point in reporting it to Apple — and there was little point in
reporting it here either.

I agree that the bug should be closed as "already fixed" — or "unable to
reproduce" in current versions — and that has already happened.
