Did all your steps, but still got crush:
# kill -USR1 `cat /var/run/httpd.pid`
# service apache24 status
apache24 is not running.
# tail -n1 /var/log/messages
May  5 14:38:20 HOST-NAME kernel: pid 48881 (httpd), jid 0, uid 0: exited on
signal 4 (core dumped)

And no real core dump.

With default apache signal 11 and core dump at /httpd.core. And gdb look same
as in your comment.
