Yeah, the fact that vinum and gvinum implemented a Veritas Volume Manager (VxVM) like capability for FreeBSD, it's not the most straightforward concept to understand. Back in my Solaris days Sun offered courses on VxVM. And later removed it for this very reason (plus licensing). I get why people didn't use it.
