Do I understand this correctly, that
  firefox-100.0_1,2 and thunderbird-91.9.0_2
worked OK with
  dbus-1.12.20,1
but fail with
  dbus-1.14.0,1 ?

I'm not there yet (other stuff in the pipeline) and still running
dbus-1.12.0,1 (but the most current firefox and thunderbird, of course)
and do not see any problem.
I'll need some time to update (there's the rust bump... and dbus itself
is in the dependency path for a lot of ports, too), so let's try to
narrow this down before I go on a wild goose chase.
