It’s more like balance in nature. Either you make it heavy on resources and save human times to enjoy the life a little bit more. Or you can host the split distfiles somewhere; 80 different ports require couple of files from the pkg; so if you want to split it in that way for each individual port; you can do that. But at the end texlive is nothing without the fonts and styles so whoever is using texlive will require texlive-texmf too. And as there is a fundamental shift in bringing FreeBSD for Desktop users; I believe keeping it is justified as it is; enjoying more nature time. :)

Considering other Linux distros we are in a better shape with the package. Debian and Fedora most probably has one single 3.5 GB package artifact.
