Most freebsd machines are not used as mail servers. DMA is small and
fast and adequate to handle mail from a stub system that might have a
local mailbox or two and relays the rest of the mail to a smarthost.

If you do want to run a mail server, you probably want to use postfix
or exim so you don't have to deal with sendmail's antique and rococo
configuration system. Having sendmail preinstalled just gets in the
way.
