I've not personally heard of a security 'issue' with mac addresses. They 
are simply the 'addresses' used to communicate to the next layer down on 
the network stack.

I suspect most do. Maintaining a database of approved and active 
modem/gateway devices connecting to their network, associated with their 
respective customers.
